Portable Gas Tank Problem!?

I left my portable 5 gallon gas tank for my boat outside yesterday in the sun. It was no hooked up to the motor and i came out this morning and it looked like someone had inflated the entire tank, and that it was going to explode. I cautiously unscrewed the cap and the tank was deflated and i pushed it into normal shape. What happened? Why?
